Telehealth Therapy: Security, Setup, & What to Expect

What to know about online sessions with Holly Altson, Psy.D. in Oregon and Washington

Why Telehealth Works

Online therapy has become a reliable and effective way to access mental health care, especially for people who live far from a large city or in smaller communities where finding a therapist can be challenging. Many people appreciate the flexibility of meeting from home, and I've found that the quality of our work together doesn't depend on being in the same room. What matters is the connection between us, and that translates seamlessly online.

What You Need

Private Space
You'll need a quiet, private place where you won't be interrupted during our session. This helps you feel safe and allows us to work without distractions.
Reliable Internet Connection
Video requires high-speed internet or a reasonably strong cellular connection. The device itself matters less than your connection — a phone or tablet with good Internet often works better than a laptop with poor WiFi.
Physical Location
You must be physically located in a state where I am licensed to practice during our session. This is necessary for my licensing and ensures I can provide appropriate care and support. (If you need to be in a different state, at some point, we can discuss the available options.)

How Sessions Work

Before each session, you'll receive a secure link via email. Simply click the link at the time of your appointment to join. Settle into your private space, and we'll begin. If you experience any technical issues while trying to connect, you can text or call me to let me know — we'll troubleshoot together if needed. Basically, if you can use a Web browser, you can participate in our sessions!

Tech Setup & Troubleshooting

Most technical issues stem from a weak internet connection or spotty cellular reception. If you're having trouble connecting or experience audio or video problems during our session, let me know and we can work through it together.

Security & Privacy

Your privacy and security matter. I use a HIPAA-compliant platform that encrypts our communication, protecting your information and our sessions. You can feel confident that what we discuss online is as secure as it would be in my office.
